MOCKUP

■ Why must the mummy return now?
For it compels us to re-examine the universal human values that are slipping away amidst our material affluence. "Black propaganda" wielded by those in power, a deluge of fake news, the fear of a pandemic, the anguished cry of a warming planet, the isolation of individuals held captive by their smartphones, and the erosion of universal emotions like love and passion—the mummy, a traveler across time, speaks to all of this with a quiet yet biting satire. Yet, even as I let the mummy speak in this way, I certainly do not abandon hope. I hold onto it for the sake of the children of the next generation.
■ Where are we heading?
Drawn with crayons—an everyday, familiar medium—these works are by turns melancholic and comical, yet they all pose the same fundamental question: Are we heading toward a bright future filled with hope, or toward a hellish catastrophe that will consume everything in flames? Tutankhamun—the most famous pharaoh of ancient Egypt, who died in his youth—is resurrected in modern society; he witnesses the world with astonishment and undergoes a myriad of transformations. The "MUMMY'S SCREAM" series, comprising eighteen crayon drawings based on this theme, acts as a mirror reflecting the distortions of modern society; it awakens emotions dormant deep within us and reminds us of values we had all but forgotten.
Indeed, the series goes further, urgently calling upon us to "wake up"—for the point of no return is already looming right before our eyes. I should also add that I drew inspiration and encouragement from The Scream by the world-renowned Norwegian painter Edvard Munch.
